invictus: fanfare for the uncommon hero
IOr simply the Invictus Fanfare is a piece written around a theme I made for a dear friend of mine, Lewis Mathis. My first job as a teenager was a waiter at an upscale retirement home- and everynight without fail, Mr. Mathis was the life of the party. A quiet and gentle man, he would regail me about his stories in World War 2, his many Italian girlfriends (all while in the swooning company of the other single female residents). I played piano many times there to entertain the residents during meals, many of the melodies improvised, and this one was always his favorite. After Lewis' passing in 2012, I orchestrated his simple theme into a fanfare for the Dallas Winds, which recieved its premiere in 2013, and subsequent performances by the UNT Brass Band and the Illinois Brass Band.
